The story behind Valentine's

February 14 began as the feast of Saint Valentine, a Roman martyr of the third century about whom almost nothing reliable is known; Pope Gelasius I established the feast in 496. For nearly nine hundred years it had no romantic associations at all. The link appears to start with Geoffrey Chaucer, whose poem Parliament of Fowls, written around 1382, describes birds choosing their mates "on Seynt Valentynes day", after which the idea spread quickly through English and French court poetry. The oldest surviving valentine is a poem that Charles, Duke of Orléans, sent to his wife in 1415 while he was held prisoner in the Tower of London after the Battle of Agincourt. Mass-produced cards arrived in the nineteenth century: Esther Howland of Worcester, Massachusetts, began making elaborate lace valentines in the late 1840s and built a substantial business on them. The Catholic Church removed the feast from its general calendar in 1969, but the secular holiday only grew. In Japan the custom runs the other way, with women giving chocolate on February 14 and men reciprocating on White Day, March 14. It is now one of the largest days of the year for florists and restaurants.
